Middle Schooler Told To Cover Up Marine T-Shirt Or Be Suspended

Today a Genoa-Kingston Middle School student’s parent is claiming that a teacher ordered his son to cover his US Marine themed t-shirt or be suspended.  Dan McIntyre says that his son Michael has wore the shirt to school many times in the past and that he is a big fan of the branch of the US military.

Dan McIntyre says that, “A teacher noticed the guns on the shirt.”  He went on to say that the teacher said there was a school policy against the image of a gun.

Michael complied when the teacher asked him to turn the shirt inside out.  However, Dan says that he son was still reported to the schools principal.

Dan says that his son, “was really bothered by it. He talked to me after school about it. I said I would have supported whatever decision he made.”

(Note Dan McIntyre is involved with the Dekalb County(IL) Marines organization, and is coordinator of the Dekalb County IL Tea Party)

(As it was after business hours no Genoa-Kingston Middle School staff members where available for comment)

*update Dan McIntyre has provided a copy of the dress code portion of the student handbook.  Part of which states that students clothing cannot promote “violent behavior” which is the only vague rationale that could be used for having Michael cover his Marine shirt.

EPSON MFP image*update II This morning the Genoa-Kingston school district issued a statement on this incident on their Facebook page:

In response to the T-Shirt worn February 25, 2012:
Had building or district administration had the opportunity to address this matter we believe this would have been effectively taken care of by administration. Since we were not given that courtesy we would now like to make a statement that relates to the United States Marines T-shirt worn to school (Genoa-Kingston Middle School) yesterday.
Genoa-Kingston Middle School is well known in the community for their support of our military. The students and staff regularly write letters of support to the troops, and hold patriotic ceremonies for
Veteran’s Day and Patriot’s Day. We very much support the armed forces and were disheartened to learn of this matter through the media. The administration and school handbook agree that this shirt is not a violation of the dress code. We also take school safety very earnestly and it needs to be recognized that is a topic that we also take very seriously and support our students and staff in providing a safe environment to learn, teach and work in on a daily basis. We thank everyone for their continued support of our school and our school district.

*update III: This story has gone viral. I am told Greta Van Susteren talked about it on her show Tuesday night on the Fox News Channel.  Fox News.com, Gateway Pundit, The Right Scoop, Breitbart, The Military Times, and The Examiner have all picked up on this story which was broken here Monday evening.

Can the teachers tell a boy who thinks he’s a girl to not wear girly stuff? Or a girl who thinks she’s a guy to not wear butchy stuff? If not, all y’all at Genoa Middle school are being played.

This is absurd! I will be on the phone with GKMS first thing tomorrow morning. The girls are allowed to walk around with clothes that do not comply with dress code, are way to tight, and showing waaay too much skin because that is their way of ‘expressing themselves’ yet when a boy is interested in the Marines and all they stand for, it’s unacceptable?! I think I’ll actually pay a visit instead with my M.A.D.D.D, Mothers Against Daughters Dating Democrats, t-shirt.

Students’ clothing cannot promote “violent behavior”.

So…would this mean that football, wrestling, Tapout, MMA, etc…shirts are out as well?

……..Parents need to be going to the school, calling the school, in droves, even picket it if it comes to that..ultimately if you want you school o change it is he parents/guardian, that can do it.. Start showing up at school attend classes be there… They cannot kick you out even if they try.. You as a parent have a right to monitor your childs education and check on them attend classes despite what they tell you or any contract signed by the teachers union..

Quit whining you freaking babies. Just turn it inside out and go about your day. The tea party is comprised of a bunch of whiners so it makes sense that the father would Piss an moan about it. Schools have rules. You all are a bunch of doughnuts. After Sandyhook, they do not want images of guns in schools. Not too hard of a concept to grasp except to some ignorant member of the tea party. You all are a joke.

Jeff, he did turn it inside out and was still reported to the principal. Sandyhook was a terrible tragedy, yes, but to be so sensitive to the matter as to make a child wearing a shirt that supports our military, turn his shirt inside out is absurd. Jeff, you are the one who is whining along with everyone else who is full of agrievement and pity for themselves. You hsve no sense of liberty or patriotism.

That’s right, “jeff”… Keep your head down. Obay the rules. Stand for nothing. Honor nothing. Commit to nothing. Believe in nothing. Be nothing…

The grown ups will be over here in the other room trying to protect your freedoms whether you want them to or not…

Sorry, pal, this has to do with the rules, that’s true, but there is NO written rule banning images of guns. The decisions was arbitrary. This shirt promotes neither guns nor violence, but the United States Marines. If you find the US Marines, offensive, then you are the joke, and a filthy one at that. If this is a violation of the rule banning advocacy of “violent behavior”, then so are all football shirts!

JEFF, at what point do you liberal twits and every overreacting knee jerking over legislating Democrats ever become embarrassed as to what you have made our over sensitive, over pc, cowardly, once great country into? Your reply as the Tea party or any true conservative organization as being whining babies and living with such absurdities only shows how cowardly pathetic you are! Schools did not have such radical liberal agendas promoting 1 party systems, anti-patriotic behaviors, fears of religion or God, deviances for sex and acceptance for homosexuality, or gender related confusions and above all else they (public schools) did actually use to cater to education. You should get your ill placed priorities straight. JERK!!

I agree with the school having rules due to all the recent violence. However, when I look at the shirt and see Marines, I automatically think of pride and honor. The weapons are used for defense. I think its a persons viewpoint and frame of mind and a person prone to violence will look and see violence, war , and fighting in anything.

I see a small offense under gang clothing but I HAVE TO ADMIT THE USMC IS THE BEST GANG 2B A MEMBER OF!!!!!!!!!!!

“The man who will go where his colors go without asking, who will fight a phantom foe in the jungle and mountain range without counting, and who will suffer and die in the midst of incredible hardship without complaint, is still what he has always been, from Imperial Rome to sceptered Britain to democratic America. He is the stuff of which legions are made. … His pride is in his colors and his regiment, his training hard and thoroughly, and coldly realistic, to fit him for whatever he must face. … And his obedience is to his orders. He has been called UNITED STATES MARINE.”

This was a judgement call made by a teacher, who thought they were doing the right thing by school policy. They were wrong and it doesn’t make them a liberal or any other 4-letter word. My son wore a Halo shirt that had a pic of a guy with a gun. He was asked to cover it up and I was not the least bit offended by it, nor was he….and I teach at the school. It didn’t have to do with the teacher not liking Halo, it was the gun. This has nothing to do with Marines, or a teacher not supporting them….many of you folks created that magical story from thin air. The administration took care of it and it should be over. Quit pretending to be a victim or feel sorry for yourself, and stop acting like the people you despise. Time to move on! FYI….I am all about school uniforms and wish my school would go to it.

There are two problems here: (1) Restriction of freedom of speech and (2) maybe it would be good if we went back to a dress code the way we had up until the ’70’s.

You call this action a “judgment call” by a teacher? Are teachers not supposed to know what the rules are and that there was nowhere in the rules that such an image which is Our Marines was not listed? They support our military? Well, show us first by teaching your students and not taking actions such as this. It is offensive to all of us who defend our military and support them. The first step in being a true American and standing for what it really means, is teaching the younger generation to appreciate it and be proud of it. This child better not be suspended or this incident be on his record.

Yes people, please have some common sense. Teacher made the mistake, school said she was wrong, the boy IS allowed to wear the shirt. There is no need to destroy this woman. BTW, she’s a conservative, lol.

A conservative public school teacher, huh? Now if that isn’t an oxymoron. I suppose you’ll offer evidence for this, to prove your point, and even if a Conservative teacher had demanded the boy hide the guns from sight, it still would’ve been under premise of liberal “politically correct” guidelines (established by everyone’s favorite pansy Democrat congress person).

She is a conservative and the wife of a farmer. Genoa for the most part is conservative and the schools do support the troops. I have known this teacher for many many years and is a good person. There are conservative teachers out there. I was one until I lost my job and haven’t been able to obtain a new one teaching. I truly believe a honest mistake was made. The school isn’t going to suspend the student.

Why is it that the site of a picture of a gun, or even somebody’s finger pointing is enough to make some of these idiot teachers tremble with fear?

Please tell me this is a figment of my imagination! They cannot be serious. A “shirt of violence” is about as insensitive and absurd as it comes. The Marines as well as all branches of the Military fight to preserve and protect our freedom. It is incredulous that a young child would be punished for his action. I wonder if you fought as hard to insure that God remains in the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t know anything about the school but when you make national headlines for something as stupid as this, it is a sure indication of having your head screwed on backwards. Wake up people, that’s not how you stop violence. In fact, it may very well be a form of bullying because he didn’t meet your standard, Shame on you for being so irresponsible. God Bless America and those that serve and protect!

She is a Mother, a Grandmother, made a mistake. I hope if your Mother, Grandmother ever makes a mistake there will be decent people out there to forgive her and offer her empathy. Empathy… what most of you are lacking. I am going to pray for you all to find your way while also respecting human life. And I will pray that your hearts heal.

You all are falling victim to sensationalism. This story, though sounds absurd without context, it should be noted that the father did NOT contact the administration to issue a complaint against the teacher. Yes, the teacher in question made a bad judgment call… however, instead of even bringing the issue up with school officials the man went straight to the media. This isn’t a case of “This school hates the marines and our nations military” but more of a case of ignorance and jumping the gun. You all should get your facts straight before jumping aboard every bandwagon that comes out of the news… especially when it comes from Fox news.
